Dr. Monique Taylor
Leading the UT Southwestern pediatric residency training program for 2004-2005 are Chief Residents Drs. Josh Koch, Stacy Stratemann, and Monique Taylor.

As leaders for the residents and for members of the faculty, Drs. Koch, Stratemann, and Taylor are responsible for oversight of the education, clinical activities, and complex daily schedules of over 80 pediatric residents, over 90 residents from other areas of medicine, and nearly 200 medical students who receive training at Children's Medical Center Dallas. In this capacity, they organize or direct educational functions, including conferences with faculty, resident-directed seminars, and case-based teaching. They also assist each resident in creating an individual curriculum that helps provide opportunities to explore career options and maximize education in pediatrics and allied areas. In addition, they set the tone for the highest quality of care by helping the residents learn from their patients and explore means to improve their practice.

The chiefs serve as liaisons between the residents and attending physicians, non-physician members of the care team, and hospital administration. They also facilitate house-staff interaction with community physicians. Clinical responsibilities for the chiefs include accepting transport admissions to the general pediatric service and serving as general pediatric ward attendings. They also serve on many hospital committees, including ex-officio members of the Medical Executive Committee.

Dr. Koch's main goal for this year is to foster the best environment possible for patient care and resident education. "I hope that we are able to continue to improve this already great residency program by putting in place systems where residents have the maximum opportunity for learning and the best available tools for good patient care." Dr. Koch will also be involved in developing a three-year curriculum for the daily noon conference, a valuable venue for resident education, with lectures from general and subspecialty attendings, who are leaders in their field.

Dr. Koch is from Wichita, Kansas, and earned his bachelor's degree from Trinity University in San Antonio. He earned his medical degree from The University of Kansas School of Medicine and will pursue a career in pediatric critical care medicine after his year as Chief Resident.

Dr. Stratemann intends to develop opportunities for residents to be active in outreach and advocacy programs for children in the community. "My goal is to help residents get involved in community projects that promote the welfare, health and safety of all children." She plans to continue to work with program leadership to encourage, among the residents, a spirit of lifelong learning and contribution to the field of pediatrics. Dr. Stratemann also hopes to learn more about working with hospital administration to enhance both the service and educational components of the residency program during her time as chief resident.

Dr. Stratemann is from New Braunfels, Texas. She received her bachelor's degree from Rice University in Houston, and her medical degree from UT Southwestern. Following her year as Chief Resident, Dr. Stratemann will begin a pediatric cardiology fellowship at Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Taylor hopes to improve the relationships among faculty and residents and to assist in the continual improvement of the quality of care experienced by patients. "I hope to expand on the already high level of teamwork to work toward an even higher level of camaraderie among the residents and the faculty, so everybody is playing together on the field." She will also assist the program in resident self-assessment. In addition, Dr. Taylor hopes to maximize the time residents spend at the hospital to allow for them to provide the best possible care while receiving the best possible education.

Dr. Taylor received her bachelor's degree from Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas, and her medical degree from UT Southwestern. She plans to pursue a career in pediatric critical care medicine.
